The Ayre VX-R is a stereo R series amplifier.
The VX-R has the same width at the KX-R Preamplifier. With the MX-R amplifiers, everyone loved them, wanted the amazing sound, but some also wanted something that would fit into a standard rack width. According to Ayre’s Charlie Hansen, the numerous requests for a rack width sized R Series amplifier prompted them to produce this.
The Ayre VX-R amplifier is built using the same billet aluminum construction as the KX-R and MX-R. In this construction Ayre takes a solid block of aluminum and has a CNC machine carve it out in three dimensions. The advantage of this is that you get the most rigid structure possible and and an extremely efficient heat dissipation system.
The VX-R has the same circuit topology as the MX-R’s. There is no feedback either locally or globally used at any point in the VX-R. The VX-R is rated at 200 wpc compared to the MX-R’s 300 wpc. According to Charlie the VX-R sounds identical to the MX-R within its power rating.
